Combined Training Report Sunday 14th September 2014
By Lucy Greenwood (event organiser)
Mid September, dry ground and a thick covering of grass at Holbrook welcomed a record number of competitors the second SWDG Dressage, SJ and Combined Training of 2014. With classes from a Walk and Trot test to Novice 30 and show jumping from 50cm to 90cm, there was something for everyone.
The day started with success for Jacqui Bolt and her young horse Treacle with a win in the Introductory A test, Chloe Carter Miles and Athos, and Pippa Tucker and Lana came a close second and third. Chloe also picked up best SWDG, best Junior went to Jemima Cheleda and Allora. Pippa went clear in the show jumping to take the lead in the combined training followed in second place by A. Williams and Commanche Choice with Jacqui Bolt and Treacle coming third.
The 50cm course, complete with mini fillers was won by Sophie Fowler and Titch with a speedy double clear and jump off time of 26.66secs. Maisie Beaton and Lucky Lane Cock Robin, best SWDG and junior, came 2nd and Helen Cheleda and Lily picked up 3rd place.
In the Prelim 4, Mandy Bluck came back from a 6 years rest from competing to win with Hot Toddy. Second, third and fourth place were very close but it was Pippa Tucker and Hasar Afsana who came in behind Mandy and Jacqui Bolt with Treacle who took 3rd. In the combined training Mandy and Pippa held their placings from the dressage and Steven Spearing and Artorious Star who came 3rd up from 5th in the dressage only section. Best Junior in both sections went to Skye Neal and Hope while committee member Mandy was the best SWDG.
The fastest four faults in the jump off in the 70cm was Robert Clover and Forest Fir closely followed by Sophie Fowler and Titch. With additional faults in the jump off Abi Downton and Toby came third.
Having used the Prelim 4 as an effective warm up Chloe Dimment and Dee won the Prelim 18 convincingly also picking up best junior. Pippa Tucker having a successful day came second on Rambo and Pam Sibley on Magic were third. Pippa and Pam came second in the combined training with best junior, Molly James and Tod coming third.
A clear by Anne Breen and Rosie was enough for them to win the 80cm class. On four faults Robert Clover and Forest Fir came 2nd, Pippa Tucker and Zara came 3rd and best junior was James Cheleda on Tomas, 4th individually.
The Novice 30 was the final test of the day and it was Lucy Greenwood and Boris who took the first prize. Karen Martin and Stan came second and Wickey Farmer and Penhaligons Costa Rica were third. The placings remained the same for the combined training despite the odd pole rolling.
In the 90cm SJ Tom Lewis and Goshenite Beryl jumped a clear round to take the lead, Pippa Tucker and Rambo had one down to come second and Holly Frizzle and Amber Lady a second to come third.
Thanks go to judges Rosemary Burden and Jacqui Bolt, helpers Mandy Beaton, Tracy Scammell, Helen Dunning, Claire Sturmey, Sara Greenwood and Michelle Hills for making it a successful day. Thanks also to Sara and Simon Greenwood for kindly allowing their land and facilities to be used for making a fun day possible.
Well done to all those who competed and hope to see you next year.
